| The Beginning
Out of a revival at a local church more than souls were born; the ministry of The Spirituals was also born. Due to the illness of the church’s song leader the group began with it’s only intent to provide music for the revival. However, God’s intention was to form a group dedicated to reaching lost souls for Him. Since 1977 The Spirituals have been sharing their love for the Lord through southern gospel music. Despite the new beginning, current founding members of the group come from a long history of gospel music. Jack’s parents sang as the Grace Union Quartet for over 50 years traveling locally and mainly in a three-state area.
The Members
Over the years the Lord has called many members to be apart of the group. It has always consisted of family in some form. Today The Spirituals are made up of original members Jack and Patty Hurt (Dad & Mom); their oldest daughter Melissa Moss, her husband Kelly, and their twin daughters Autumn & Audrey; their youngest daughter Marla Hicks, her husband Tony, and their daughter Haley.
Jack, Patty, Marla, and Kelly make up the main vocals for the group. Tony and Haley also have singing parts during each concert. They both have the ability to sing versatile parts and fill the vacancies when one of the other group members is unable to perform. Melissa is the sound person for the group and she, along with Tony and Haley, babysit the twins during the concerts.
The History
Throughout the early years of ministry The Spirituals recorded annual projects at a local studio. In 1989, they did their first recording with the Eddie Crook Company, releasing their first national single, "Teach Me to Pray", written by Kelly Moss which charted in the Singing News Top 100. Since that time they have released several singles to national radio stations. After recording two projects with the Eddie Crook Company the opportunity arose to record with Daywind Records. With this new recording came The Spirituals’ first radio single to chart nationally in the Singing News Top 80. The group received many calls and letters from people whose hearts were changed from hearing the song. In March of 1990, they completed their first live recording in front of a sell out crowd at the Texas Troubadour Theater in Nashville, TN. The Lord's presence was definitely in the room that night and with that recording came two new single releases, "Master's Lullaby", and "He's Never Been Late", both written by anointed songwriter Rob Buckner. There have been many recordings and single releases since those early years. Some have even seen success by man’s standards, but regardless of worldly fame The Spirituals have always taken their ministry to any place the Lord has called them to go. From the smallest church to the largest concert hall their message is the same; Jesus is Lord. He saves, heals, and loves those who call on His name.
The Mission
The Spirituals consider traveling and ministering for Christ their greatest honor in life; however, throughout their years of ministry they have received various awards and honors, but the greatest rewards have been the many, many lost souls they have seen come to Christ through their ministry. The Spirituals have been called to one mission and that is to “minister for the Lord Jesus Christ.” Their number one goal is to reach lost souls for Christ, by sharing thier family love for Jesus wherever He opens the door for them to go.
